National Geek Awareness Day

As part of my Visual Merchandising brief, I was asked to create a window display for one of many listed high street stores and using a national day / theme to base the window on. I chose Ted Baker as my store and after much deliberation between National Geek Awareness Day and National Veggie Day, I decided Geek Day would be a lot more appropriate.

I started with looking at how geek has gone from being 'uncool' to 'trendy' ! After asking a selection of people, I found the main thing people connect to a geek, are the big square trim glasses, which are now deemed fashionable. It was also becoming popular on the catwalk, with International Designer of the Year’ Luelle Bartley featuring the look strongly on her S/S 08 collection.

From my initial research, I looked into the history of Ted Baker. When the stores first opened, they provided a laundry service for every shirt purchased. This is where the quirky sense of humour started, since then, shoppers have received Paxo Stuffing at christmas and world cup 2006 football cards. Ted Baker remains one of the only brands without an advertising campaign.

I also looked at WGSN which had interesting and informative archives revolving geeks. I was torn between using lego and computers or geek glasses and mismatched clothes as the main focus on my window. I felt that glasses and mismatched clothes was a lot more suitable and more appropiate for a Ted Baker window display.

Using photoshop & cut and stick, I created my shop window.
